SCOTT HOLLOW CAVE

Bowen Dome Extension of Spooky Hollow

January 14, 2006

The Spooky Hollow section of Scott Hollow Cave, was discovered in the late 1990's. On March 13, 2004, four
members of the Tri-State Grotto were surveying what is known as the BJ survey. Billy Gibberson knew the trail
and was sketching. Jeff Hajenga and Bob Bennett were doing front and back sights, and Jerry Bowen was pulling
measuring tape and reading off distances. Near the end of this passage, Jerry was looking backwards scanning his
surroundings, and noticed a dark hole in the top-left of his picture. A completly virgin passage lay ahead of this
exploration.

Jerry took off in a smooth limestone tube. The shuffling of hands and feet made a hollow echo. Bouncing along
at a pretty good clip, he was stopped by formations. The explorers called this formation "Jail House Rock". Hearing
water, the explorers discovered they could make good their entrance if they turned up on their right side and
slither through like a snake. On the other side of the formation, a dome was discovered about 30 feet high with a
waterfall issuing from a high lead. A second dry lead was also noticed. A note was made that we needed to return
and climb the leads.

A full and more detailed version of the discovery of this dome can be found in the April 2004 issue of the Dead
Dog Dispatch. On January 14, 2006, the original survey team returned with others to aid in the climbing and
exploring of the two high leads. Members of the climb team are: Gilly Gibberson, Jeff Hajenga, Bob Bennett,
Greg McCoy, Lauren Rexford, Ben Doan, Ehren Giskey and Jerry Bowen. These eight adventurers endured the
hardship of draging in scaling poles, and other related equipment, and enjoyed the thrill of climbing a well
placed cable ladder in mid-air.
